Susie Scout in my First 3 Word Wednesday

25 Jan

Following up my previous post and what with the end of my exams (Yay I don’t have to feel bad til I get my dreadful results in a months time!) I have now written my first Three Word Wednesday for a character I’ve had in my head for a long time. Its only a tiny excerpt, but it is a start and uses the words: brag, polite and icy.

Tell me what you think!!

“Troop, troop alert!” ordered Skip loudly, and the unit jumped to attention, “Sophie, can Eagles do the flag?”

I tall girl smartly dressed in her green shirt adored with a multitude of coloured badges stepped forwards and pulled the string to release the Union Flag which hung at the front of the for-then-silent Scout Hut. She stopped to salute the flag and Susie noticed that everyone else did too, so she copied them. It was only her second week at a Scout meeting and she was still unsure as to what she was meant to be doing most of the time.

“Troop, at ease,” shouted Skip again, and the troop did so.

“Feet shoulder width apart, hands behind back,” Susie reminded herself.

“Right, it’s first Monday of the month!” continued Skip, “and you know what that means.”

There was a collective groan from most of the older Scouts, “No, not inspection!” moaned one particularly scruffy Assistant Patrol Leader from Badgers.

“That’s right,” said Skip, “And I don’t want to see any of you lot trying to blag your way out, this time. If you forget your necker because your aunt’s brother’s wife’s cat ate it then you should tell me before hand and I can sort out a new one for you,” a hand shot up, “yes, Kevin, your mum told me your shirt ripped, we’ll take that into account.”

An icy shiver ran down Susie’s spine. It was only her second week; she didn’t have a shirt, let alone a neckerchief! All she had was her old tatty Cub Scout Jumper. She looked down the line of her patrol: all in differing states of tidiness from pristinely ironed, rolled and tucked Laurence to Kate who appeared to be missing all but one button on her shirt and had her scarf tied haphazardly under her ear. But they all at least had uniforms!

“Excuse me,” she asked Jake, the Patrol Leader, politely, “I’m really sorry I don’t have uniform yet. Is that going to count against me?”

He smiled, “Of course not, they know you’re new it’s a good enough excuse for the first few weeks. You may need a shirt by next month and then you might get invested too!”

Susie breathed a sigh of relief.

“Anyway,” he added, “you look a lot smarter in your jumper than Stu does,” he pointed to a dark haired Badger, “he’s been here months and I’m not sure I’ve seen him in more than his necker once. He brags about his untidiness, but he’s just letting his side down.”

Susie followed his gaze to see a lad whose shirt was in a worse state than Kate’s. Only one badge sewn on: the purple World badge which Susie had on her jumper, but it was sewn on in luminous green thread and half hanging off at that.

She was going to be okay, she wasn’t going to let her new patrol down.
